What's Happening to Cypress Bridge?
The City of Redding is preparing a project to widen Cypress Avenue at its crossing of the Sacramento River by replacing the existing bridge structure. The new bridge will increase the number of traffic lanes from four to six (three in each direction) and provide bicycle lanes and sidewalks in both directions from Athens Avenue to Hartnell Avenue. This large-scale project will cost between 45 and 58 million dollars, including engineering, right-of-way, environmental, and construction, and it will take at least three years to construct. The largest funding source for the project is the Caltrans bridge rehabilitation and replacement fund. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2006 and be completed in fall 2009. Sometime this year, City Council will approve a new bridge design from one of the options surrounding this text.
