Tarping Regulations

Properly tarped load

Effective July 1, 2004 all loads entering the R.W. Curry West Central Landfill and the City of Redding Solid Waste Recycling and Transfer Station must be Tarped.

City and County officials took the proactive approach of passing ordinances requiring tarps at both sites as a way to cut down on roadside litter that can blow out of vehicles, if not properly secured. The new policy applies to self-haul as well as commercial loads. Any vehicle not properly tarped will be required to either purchase a tarp at the scalehouse or pay double the regular tipping fee.

                                                                                                                                                          Properly tarped load

The exceptions are loads that have tightly bagged garbage, garbage cans with tight-fitting lids, or bulky items such as couches, mattresses, appliances and tires.  Any item that weighs less than 5 pounds MUST be tarped.

"When in doubt, use a tarp," recommends the Solid Waste Manager.  "Customers should be prepared to untie the tarps at the scale house because the attendants have to check the loads for prohibited items."
