The City of Redding's Transfer Station and Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is located on the East side of Redding at 2255 Abernathy Lane (see map). The facility was constructed in 1994/5 and operations started in April, 1995. The Transfer Station currently processes about 500 tons of garbage each day and was designed to operate at 750 tons per day to allow for growth.
A transfer station is a facility where solid waste is transferred from smaller daily collection trucks to larger, more efficient transfer trucks. The purpose of a transfer station is to economize the shipment of waste for disposal.
Municipal, commercial and self-haul solid waste and recyclable materials are received at the Transfer Station then dumped inside the processing building. Garbage is loaded into transfer trucks. Each truck can transport the equivalent of 8-10 smaller daily collecting trucks. Transporting the waste in one larger transfer truck, as opposed to several smaller trucks, reduces the operating costs considerably.

Recyclable materials are processed at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF). There the recyclables are sorted and baled. Recyclable materials include: newspaper, aluminum, office paper, cardboard, PET and HDPE plastic beverage containers, glass bottles and jars, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, and tin cans. For a complete list of recyclable materials and details on curbside recycling, click here. The City contracts with the Shasta County Opportunity Center to provide sorting personnel at the MRF. Approximately 31 tons of recyclables are processed daily.
The Solid Waste Utility also operates the West Central Landfill on Clear Creek Road (see map), which is owned by the County of Shasta. This is where all of the City of Redding's solid waste is transported. The landfill accepts commercial and residential solid waste from everywhere in Shasta County.
