Responsibility for roadway sweeping was shifted from the Streets/Storm Drain Utility to the Solid Waste Utility on July 1, 2004. The Solid Waste Utility is now responsible for sweeping 685 curb/miles of roadways. Currently, there are two sweepers and two operators to accomplish this task. A sweeper retained by the Streets/Storm Drain Utility serves as a back-up unit for emergencies.
The City's street sweeping program currently sweeps arterial routes twice per week, and residential streets once every month, and some state highways through contractual agreements.
The major reasons for street sweeping are:
- To prevent annoyances arising from street dirt and dust.
- To prevent the clogging of storm drain catch basins.
- To enhance the appearance of the community.
- To promote safety and to comply with the implementation of NPDES regulations by 2006.
