Parks Maintenance is responsible for the following:
Irrigation System Maintenance
Our staff installs, maintains and troubleshoots, manual and automatic sprinkler systems. Our crews also wire in 110 volt irrigation controllers and 24 volt electric valves.
Tree Maintenance
We have a full service tree maintenance program. This includes proper tree selection, planting, watering, pruning, cabling, pest identification and control, tree removals and stump removals.
Our crews also assist the Redding Municipal Utility and the Redding Electric Utility departments with storm damage cleanup, as well as a variety of other projects.
A Comprehensive Tree Plan adopted by City Council
has been prepared
to assist the development community in understanding the basic concepts of designing and working around existing trees.
The Parks Division has three Certified Arborists and a line qualified tree trimmer on staff. Our staff offers advice on tree selections, tree pest control and hazard evaluation to the citizens of Redding as a public service. (30 hours of ceu's are required every 3 years to maintain an Arborist Certificate)
Park Maintenance
Our staff maintains the landscaping at 33 parks, 3 boat ramp facilities, 14 medians and landscaped areas, as well as the landscaping around City Hall, the Police Station, the Downtown Mall parking lots and the old CDF complex on Parkview Ave.
This maintenance consists of mowing the turf areas each week (over 200 acres per week), edging the turf, irrigation system maintenance and repair, programming controllers, fertilizing, planting and pruning trees and shrubs, controlling weeds and pests, inspecting/maintaining playgrounds, maintaining and repairing buildings, cleaning restrooms, picking up litter, repairing vandalism and setting up for special events.
Playground Maintenance
The Parks Division is responsible for the maintenance of 23 playgrounds ( 96 individual pieces of equipment). These playgrounds are given a through written inspection each month. The playgrounds are also checked on a weekly basis by our park patrol person as well as other parks staff working in the parks.
The majority of the composite play structures in our parks have been constructed by Parks Division staff. It is our goal to bring all of our playgrounds up to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Guidelines and ASTM-F1487-95 Standards as the budget allows.
Trail Maintenance
The Parks Division in responsible for the maintenance of 10 trail systems, totaling 15.11 miles of trail. When both sides of the trail are considered, this computes to 30.22 miles of trail to maintain.
Our trail maintenance consists of pruning back encroaching trees and bushes, picking up litter, spraying and removing weeds and keeping debris off the trail. We also clean and maintain any restroom facilities along the trails.
Athletic Facilities
The Parks Division is responsible for the maintenance of 8 baseball and softball fields, 1 soccer field and 1 roller hockey facility. Our Division also prepares farm league and soccer fields at local high school facilities.
This maintenance consists of laying out fields per league specifications, installation and maintenance of chain link fences and backstops, dugout and concession stand repair and maintenance, maintenance and repair of lighting and PA systems, maintenance of bleachers, scoreboard maintenance, mowing and fertilization of turf areas, sprinkler systems maintenance, application of herbicides to control weeds along fences, in dirt infield areas and in foul lines. We also clean and maintain restrooms at these facilities, as well as clean up litter.
Pest Control
The Parks Division has 3 licensed Agricultural Pest Control Advisors on staff who are responsible for writing pest control recommendations for pesticide use on city properties. It requires 40 ceu's every 2 years for the Advisors to maintain their licenses. We also have 9 employees who hold Qualified Applicator Certificates. These employees have been trained in the safe use of pesticides and have passed state tests. They require 20 hrs. of ceu's every 2 years to maintain their certificates.
Backflow Prevention
We have an employee on staff who is a Certified Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester. He is responsible for the annual testing of backflow prevention assembly devices located in all of the Parks Division areas of responsibility.
Swimming Pool Maintenance
The Parks Division is responsible for the maintenance of the, "Redding Plunge". This is a 50 meter swimming pool which is located in Caldwell Park. Our staff monitors the water quality to make sure that the chemical levels meet the Shasta County Health Department specifications, our crews paint the pool, and perform all building maintenance at this facility. Our division has a Certified Pool Operator on staff who has passed tests on the operation of municipal swimming operation.
Landscape Maint. Districts
The Parks Division is responsible for the monthly inspection of 34 Landscape Maintenance Districts. This division also administers the maintenance contracts for these districts and works closely with the contractors who receive the bids to perform maintenance on these properties.
Special Events
The Parks Division provides labor and material for a wide variety of Special Community Events, such as: Jazz Festival, Kool April Nights, Banner Program, Marketfest, Ducky Derby and Freedom Festival.
Our division also prepares facilities for National Softball Tournaments and provides assistants to the Convention Center staff for various events. Some of these events require our staff to load and transport aluminum bleachers to the event locations. Our crews are required to possess a Commercial Drivers License in order to operate the equipment necessary to load and transport these bleachers. We are also required to obtain a Wide Load Permit each year from the California Department of Transportation in order to transport the bleachers.
